In 1969, given that the Insurance Companies were established only in Athens, the person who was then a Bank Officer, Melas Gianniotis, leaves his position in the Bank and the obligatory insurances of the Bank’s borrowers and from an Insurance Agency, in Thessaloniki, starts activating in the field of insurances, cooperating with Greek and foreign Insurance Companies.
Very soon he undertakes and develops the Branch Office of Northern Greece of a German Insurance Company and at the same time, he is elected as a General Secretary of the Insurance Agents’ Association of Thessaloniki. During this time, a decree is issued annulling the prohibitions and permitting the Insurance Companies to have their headquarters outside Athens, first of all in Thessaloniki and in continuance in Kavala, Larissa, Patra and Iraklio of Crete, where the foundation and operation of insurance companies was not possible. The other cities and areas of the country continue to be deprived of the rights and multiple benefits offered by the Headquarters of the Private Insurance Agents. With the revocation of the prohibition and against the serious disincentives, Mr. Gianniotis sets as an aim and goal the foundation of the Greek Private Insurance Company, having its headquarters in Thessaloniki; this was considered to be infeasible up to that time.
In 1974, the first after-war Insurance Company is founded from scratch in Thessaloniki, with the participation of two Bank officers and two Businessmen. Mr. Melas Gianniotis, from his position as a Managing Director, keeping the 25% of the share pack, leads the effort. The actual difficulties and fragile share composition very soon cause his withdrawal from it and lead to the foundation of the first Insurance Company and consequently INTERSALONIKA Group (1978).
Using the experience gained from the former insurance activities, he establishes and wisely organizes the new General Insurance Company, by means of a safe gradual entry and conquest system of the closed insurance market, from the province to the urban centers of the country.
At the same time, the cooperation with foreign Insurance Companies is maintained, gaining new experiences and ten years later (1988) the second Insurance Company, INTERSALONIKA LIFE & HEALTH is founded constituting the first founded Greek Life Insurance Company outside Athens, based on European standards. The new Company having a wide share basis becomes the Group’s Leading Company.
Mr. Melas Gianniotis is elected President of the new local Association of Insurers of Northern Greece, holding this position up to today. From the position he holds he is in a great conflict with the organized interests and operating networks of the field, from which he is constantly detached.
In 1995, two new subsidiary Companies are added to the Group, that is, INTERSALONIKA TECHNICAL S.A. and AIR INTERSALONIKA, contributing to the work and development of the parent Insurance Companies.
INTERSALONIKA TECHNICAL S.A. undertakes the technical support and the repairs – maintenances of any type of vehicles, with privately-owned Multi-crews, Technical Control Centers, Exhaust Gas Control Cards, Spare parts etc.
AIR INTERSALONIKA, with a privately-owned fleet of flying means and specialized Personnel, undertakes the Urgent Air transport of the insured and clients of the Group, also carrying out leased flights inland and abroad.
In 2002, the fifth subsidiary Company of INTERSALE S.A. Group is founded, undertaking the Sale Promotion of Financial Services
with the foundation, at the same time, of INTERSALONIKA of Bulgaria, undertaking the provision of Breakdown Services in the neighboring country, as well as in other Balkan countries, mainly for the local service provision of the Greek insured, visitors and travelers.
With the liberalization of the competition and prices of the insurance costs imposed with the application of the European Union Guidelines, benefits and monopolies applied for many years in Greece are abrogated, permitting “INTERSALONIKA” General Insurance, by means of a densely and well organized network in the Province and outside great urban centers, where the main volume of the good works is concentrated, to establish up to 100% cheaper insurance costs. By offering multiple useful Provisions and Insurance Services for the Greek citizen and with its own means and privately-owned infrastructure, gradually conquers the up to then closed insurance market in the Branch of Cars and Road Breakdown Services, constituting the most fundamental branch of all the insurance activities. It assesses a leading role and leads the advancements in competition, with a portfolio at the number of 400.000 insured clients and through developing a network with more than 1.000 Associates. Predicting the new millennium advancements to come, the Group changes its orientation and chooses the individual to be its primary care, the second being his property and vehicles.
